  2.                  GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST

  5.      This  information  is  prepared  by  the Radio Society of Great
  6. Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2  metre  bands
  7. by stations in all parts of the country.
  8.  
  9.  
  10.      This  is  the  GB2RS  news  broadcast  for  the week commencing
  11. Sunday, 7th September.
  12.  
  13.  
  14.      The annual Lincoln Hamfest - run by the Lincoln Short Wave Club
  15. - takes place today, 7th September at the Lincolnshire Showground.
  16.  
  17.      This year's event opens at 10.30am and features over  70  trade
  18. and special interest stands including AMSAT-UK, BARTG, RAOTA and the
  19. grand  bring-and-buy stall. The RSGB will be in attendance providing
  20. a bookstall and the usual membership services  and  RAFARS  will  be
  21. running a demonstration station and rig check facility.

  23.      There   is   plenty   to   interest   the   whole  family  with
  24. demonstrations of model aircraft and cars, childrens  videos,  Punch
  25. and   Judy   and  a  judo  demonstration  for  the  more  energetic.
  26. Refreshments will be provided by new caterers this  year  and  there
  27. will be a real ale bar.

  29.      Chris  Jones G6AJL of BBC Radio Lincolnshire - who incidentally
  30. was the first BBC local radio  presenter  to  be  a  licenced  radio
  31. amateur - will be presenting his "Sunday Search" programme live from
  32. the Hamfest between 11am and 1pm.
  33.  
  34.      The Lincolnshire Showground is situated on the main A15 about 4
  35. miles  north  of the city and is easily reached from all main routes
  36. via the new outer ring road. Talk-in will be provided on S22 by  the
  37. West Lincolnshire RAYNET group and there is ample car parking space.

  39.  
  40.      SCOTAM  '86  the annual Scottish amateur radio convention takes
  41. place next Sunday, 13th September at the Lomond Centre,  Glenrothes,
  42. Fife.
  43.      The convention will be opened formally at 11am by Alan Deveraux
  44. GM8VJV and chairman of the Scottish tourist board. All usual traders
  45. will  be  represented  and  the RSGB will be in attendance providing
  46. membership services and a  bookstall.  The  lecture  programme  will
  47. include  "50MHz  achievements  and  expectations"  by  Ray Cracknell
  48. G2AHU; "Antenna tuning units" by  Peter  Chadwick,  G3RZP;  and  "HF
  49. contesting  and  DXing"  by  GM3YOR.  There  will  be  full  bar and
  50. restaurant facilities and talk-in will be provided on  S22.  Further

  57.      Here  is a list of Morse test centres currently taking bookings
  58. for tests in October. The deadline for applications varies according
  59. to the date of the test. Places will  be  allocated  strictly  on  a
  60. first-come first-served basis.

  97. SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
  98. ------------------

  100.      The period 21st to 31st August has seen a steady  but  moderate
  101. sunspot  count  of  11.  The  solar flux varies little lately and is
  102. averaging 68.4 units.
  103.      The geomagnetic A index has  been  has  been  as  high  as  the
  104. sub-storm  level  of  25  unit on the 21st and 22nd but has declined
  105. steadily over the period to the unsettled level of around 14  units.
  106. The  average  for  the period was 17 units, being the most disturbed
  107. period since last February. The activity was caused by a  60  degree
  108. long filament disintegration in the sun's southern hemisphere.
  109.      The  INDA  index for the 18th to 24th August was unsettled with
  110. the 22nd being being a very disturbed day. A level of 48 units and a
  111. strong solar wind particle input level was recorded. 
  112.      The provisional mean sunspot number for August was  7.4.  There
  113. was  a  maximum of 14 on the 23rd and zeroes on the 10th, 15th, 18th
  114. and 19th.

  117. IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
  118. ----------------------------------
  119.  
  120.      The F2 critical frequencies have varied little over the period.
  121. The 28th and 29th were at 5.8MHz and the average for the period  was
  122. 5.4MHz.  Surprisingly,  sporadic  E  is still being reported on many
  123. days, lasting 11 hours on the 27th and 4 hours on the 28th.
  124.      The darkness hour lows are continuing  to  decline  and  follow
  125. seasonal  changes.  They varied little and averaged 2.3MHz. Spread F
  126. has been reported at odd times but is not serious.

  129. IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
  130. -----------------------------------------------
  131.  
  132.      Daytime F2 critical frequencies averaged 4.6MHz with  the  only
  133. high  day being the 28th, at 5.1MHz, but this was offset by the 25th
  134. and 30th at 4.2MHz.
  135.      The darkness hour lows are continuing to fall and are following
  136. the seasonal changes; they  are  now  averaging  1.6MHz.  The  total
  137. absorption  and  sporadic  E  during  the  early  morning  hours was
  138. associated with the magnetic disturbance of the 21st to 23rd August.
  139. It is possible that these were due to a weak aurora.  Spread  F  has
  140. returned  and  was reported on every day. Sporadic E was reported to
  141. have lasted for 6 hours on the 27th.

  145. SOLAR FORECAST
  146. --------------
  147.  
  148.      The very disturbed geomagnetic conditions of late are  expected
  149. to  die  down  generally  but  midnight  conditions  could  still be
  150. disturbed and daytime conditions unsettled.
  151.      Ionospheric levels are  expected  to  recover  during  daylight
  152. hours  but the seasonal variations for the darkness hours are likely
  153. to result in a decline in critical levels as winter approaches.
  154.      The general solar activity is expected to be very low this week
  155. as the spotless face of the sun will be  looking  our  way.  The  F2
  156. daylight critical frequencies are expected to be higher than of late
  157. and  they  could  well reach 6.5MHz - or a MUF of 20MHz in the south
  158. and 5.4MHz - or a MUF of 17MHz in the north.

  162.      The closing date for application forms for special Jamboree  On
  163. the  Air  (JOTA),  is  first  post  on  Monday  22nd  September.  No
  164. applications can be accepted after that date. Applications  must  be
  165. made on the official form which is available from RSGB HQ.

  167.      A  list  of JOTA stations will be available at the beginning of
  168. October. To obtain your copy please send a large  24  pence  stamped
  169. addressed  envelope  marked  "JOTA  list" to the Membership Services
  170. department at RSGB HQ.

  174. SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS

  177. Special event stations this week include:-

  179.      GB2LRS - throughout  today  (7th  September)  from  Hastingwood
  180. Common,  near  Harlow,  to  celebrate  the  25th  anniversary of the
  181. Loughton and district ARS. Special QSL cards will be available.

  183.      GB4SFS - on Saturday 13th September at  Sandwell  Fire  Service
  184. open  day.  The  station will be run by the West Bromwich Central RC
  185. and will be operational from 9am until 5pm on HF and VHF.

  187.      GB4DBF on 13th and  14th  September  to  mark  the  forthcoming
  188. establishment of the Douglas Bader Foundation - a rehabilitation and
  189. sports facility at Simpson, near Milton Keynes and will be active on

  191. available for all contacts.

  206.      The publication of  the  latest  issue  of  Oscar  News  -  the
  207. AMSAT-UK journal - has been delayed in order to include latest JAS-1
  208. launch  details  and orbital information. Orbital trackers for JAS-1
  209. are now available and the next orbital  calendar  will  contain  the
  210. orbit details and EQXs.

  212.      The  JAS-1  "Fuji"  technical  and  operating  manual  will  be
  213. available from AMSAT-UK in about 3 to 4 weeks time. In the meantime,
